Questions

The common ones. The app's guide has the rest, step by step: the guide (PDF). Videos are coming soon. Still stuck? Support.

Before you buy

Which cars does it work with?

The logger reads cars and light trucks that speak CAN on their OBD-II port: most from 2008 on in North America, and many earlier. Trucks and tractors (J1939) and boats (NMEA 2000) work through a connector box with their plug. Older cars on K-line, about 1996 to 2007, and Honda's fuel-injected AquaTrax and Rincon are what the K-line logger is for, which is in development.

Is there a subscription?

The app and your account are free. Ridgewake Plus, for directions, trails, the 3D replay and more, is optional: yearly or monthly in the app, with a year included with each logger. The Tracking edition's live map has a monthly data plan, with three months included. See pricing.

When can I buy one?

Each product goes on sale once its radio testing and paperwork for Canada, the US and Europe are done. Leave your email on a product's page and we will write the day it opens.

Will it work with my car?

Most likely, if it was made from 2008 on. The compatibility check goes by the make, the year and where it was sold, or its VIN, and the three questions pick the box.

Does it need my phone in the car?

No. The logger records by itself and sends drives over Wi-Fi when you park near a network it knows. The phone is only one more way to send them.

Setting it up

Setting up, step by step
  1. Install the Ridgewake app and create an account, or sign in to yours.
  2. Plug the connector box into the OBD-II port under the dashboard.
  3. Plug the main box into a USB car charger in the car's power socket, and start the car.
  4. In the app, on the Vehicles tab, press Set up a new logger and tap your logger when it shows.
  5. Type the code on its label and press Unlock it: the logger is now on your account.
  6. Look for Wi-Fi, tap your network and type its password. Add your phone's hotspot too, if you like.
  7. Drive. The drive arrives in the app when you park near that Wi-Fi, or through your phone.
How do I set up a new logger?

Plug the connector box into the OBD-II port and the main box into a USB car charger. In the app, on the Vehicles tab, press Set up a new logger, tap your logger, type the code on its label and press Unlock it. Then look for Wi-Fi, tap your network and type its password. That is all.

Where is the OBD-II port?

Under the dashboard on the driver's side in almost every car, often behind a small cover. The connector box is made to fit behind that cover.

Which Wi-Fi does it use?

Up to three networks: your home network where the car parks, and your phone's hotspot if you like, so it can send drives from anywhere. It needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (most home routers have both).

What if it never parks near Wi-Fi?

Your phone can carry the drives over Bluetooth. On the Sync tab press Find the logger, or in Settings turn on Send drives by itself: after each drive the phone takes them and sends them over its own data, with the app closed.

Does it drain the car's battery?

The main box runs from a USB car charger, so it is off whenever the charger is. The connector box sleeps when the car is parked, waking for a moment every few seconds to see whether the car has started.

Updates

How do I update the logger's firmware?

You do not have to: once a day it checks for a newer version over Wi-Fi, and installs it only once the download checks out. To update it now, open the vehicle's card in the app and press Update firmware, with your phone near the main box and its charger on. No computer or cable is needed.

An update stopped halfway

Nothing is lost. The logger keeps the version it had until the new one is written in full and checked, so it carries on as before. Start it again from the app, or let it try again by itself.

Which version does my logger have?

On the vehicle's card in the app, beside the logger's id. Have both at hand when you write to us.

The lights

What do the lights on the main box mean?
  • Blue, blinking: looking for the connector box.
  • Red and blue together: the connector box is found, and the car has not answered yet.
  • Green: the car is answering and a drive is being recorded.
  • Green, blinking fast: sending drives.
  • Blue and green, blinking together: looking for your phone, for two minutes, after a quick press of the button.
  • Blue and green together: your phone is connected.
  • Red and green blinking together (it looks amber): a drive is waiting and could not be sent yet, because no Wi-Fi it knows is in range.
  • Red: a problem with its memory card. Write to us.
  • Red, flickering fast while you hold the button: keep holding to 10 seconds to make it forget everything, or let go to cancel.
  • All off: asleep, or the charger is off.

Using it

What do the red and orange circles mean?

On each vehicle in the app, a red circle counts what is wrong (the check-engine light, a fault code), an orange one what needs a look (a low battery, low fuel). The green fill on the vehicle is how much fuel is in the tank.

Will it change anything in my car?

No. The connector box only asks the car for readings and fault codes; anything else is refused before it reaches the car.

What does the button do?

A quick press: it looks for your phone for two minutes (blue and green blinking), then uploads. Two quick presses: it lets a new phone in. Hold 10 seconds: it forgets its Wi-Fi, its drives and your account.

A drive is missing

It is still on the logger until it has been sent: nothing is deleted before your account has it. Park near a Wi-Fi network it knows, or send it with your phone from the Sync tab. A quick press on the logger's button makes it try at once.

How does it get updates?

By itself over Wi-Fi, or from the app over Bluetooth (Update firmware on the vehicle's card).

I have a new phone

Sign in to the app on the new phone. If the logger does not show up, press its button twice quickly: for two minutes it lets a new phone in.

Selling the car, or giving the logger away

Hold the logger's button for 10 seconds: it forgets its Wi-Fi, its drives and your account, and the next owner sets it up with the same label. The drives already on your account stay yours.

Tracking edition

How often does the live map move?

A position every 10 seconds while it drives, sent every 5 minutes, and a check-in every 4 hours while it is parked.

What happens if I stop paying for the data plan?

After 7 days' grace its mobile data is switched off: the live map, theft alert and geofences stop, and nothing is charged. It keeps logging, and drives still arrive over Wi-Fi and your phone. Pay again and it comes back on. See pricing.

How does the theft alert work?

If the vehicle moves more than 200 m, or faster than 15 km/h, with the engine off, you get an email.

Orders

How do I pay?

On our Shopify store's own checkout page: your card and address are entered there, never on this site.

Can I return it?

See warranty and returns.

Where do you ship?

Canada and the United States first, from Ontario, Canada. Shipping is worked out at checkout. See shipping.

Your data

Who can see my drives?

You, signed in to your account. A drive is shared only when you make a link to it, and stops being shared when you say so. A vehicle you share with family shows them its drives and codes, and they change nothing. See Privacy.

Can I take my drives with me?

Yes: the data export saves everything as one ZIP (every drive as a spreadsheet and a GPX route, your fuel log, battery readings and places), and the logbook saves as a spreadsheet (CSV) and any route as a GPX file.

How do I delete my account?

In the app: Settings, Delete the account. Its drives, logbook and its claim on every logger go with it.

Write to us

A real person reads every message, and we answer within two working days. For a logger, say its id and firmware version from the app. Never send your password or the code on the label.
